Responsible Tourism “From concept to execution,
Kanimbla View is ecotourism at its best.” Guy
Chester, former V-P, Ecotourism Australia
We set out at Kanimbla View to design and operate a retreat that would accommodate our guests in great style and comfort – without costing the Earth.
Those who have stayed here, including some nationally and internationally known environmentalists and ecotourism authorities, believe we have achieved our vision. Kanimbla View has won several awards for our environmental best practices.
Here are some highlights of our approach to responsible tourism.
Land management We have recently entered into a Voluntary Conservation Agreement with NSW’s National Parks & Wildlife Service to co-manage Kanimbla View’s clifftop sanctuary. This VCA will preserve the escarpment and habitat of rare and endangered species like the Glossy Black Cockatoo.
Wildlife refuge The National Parks & Wildlife Service has also declared the whole of Kanimbla View a wildlife refuge. You’ll love our birds, frogs, lizards and other wildlife – and understand why we don’t allow pets on the property.
Built environment Our buildings – especially the eco-cottages – have been designed, sited and built to minimize their environmental impact. You will see how well they set into the bush. Their interiors are notable for our extensive use of natural and recycled materials.
Energy management Our cottages are solar-powered. Even the Glasshouse Spa runs off a solar grid-connect system. No wonder the Discovery Channel rated us one of the 10 best solar-powered tourism properties in the world: just click on their logo for more details.
Waste & water management
We make it possible for you to contribute to our extensive recycling and composting program.
Water-saving measures include our odourless composting toilets that not only use no water but also mininmise our impact on the bush (and allow us to keep our rhododendrons well fertilised!).
Environmental education
You will find in your accommodation extensive information about Kanimbla View’s environment and Australian flora and fauna generally. As supporters of the Australian Conservation Foundation’s “Earthkids” program, we also have a good supply of educational materials to help your children learn more about the bush.
Community We have been involved from the beginning in supporting CAST – the Community Alliance for Sustainable Tourism in the Blue Mountains. For more info about our environmental features – and those of other CAST members – go to: www.bluemts.com.au/ecotourism.
Accolades
Kanimbla View holds Advanced Accreditation from Ecotourism Australia.
We are
also a partner in the Blue Mountains “Advantage” program
for sustainable businesses.
Here are what some of our past guests have had to say about our commitment to the environment.
"As environmental journalists with a special interest in the concept of ecotourism we were amazed at the sensitive and thought through concept that you have structured your ecotourism business with. You do not seem to have forgotten anything - even supplying your guests with views of the Blue Mountains escarpments … that can easily compete with the icons of this magnificent area. Well, better in a way: here you are by yourself … with the beautiful landscape. We wish you the very best of luck in your future environmental challenges and missions." Peter Hanneberg (co-founder of the Swedish Ecotourist Society)
"You have successfully illustrated that you can create a pleasant, welcoming space with an appropriate ambience for your setting and construct and run it with minimal harm to the environment. I wish you every success as each successful model will encourage others to see it is possible." Penelope Figgis AM, V-P, Australian Conservation Foundation
"We need more eco-friendly places like yours around Australia. Thanks! You've given us food for thought for our new house...."
"Your devotion to ecological consciousness is inspirational and has really given me pause for thought as to what I can actively do to aid in supporting the environment."
"Your love for the environment was immediately catching and slightly contagious!! Without Hilary's description of the Lyrebird, we may never have spotted one on our journey."
